Hockey Tournament

On Monday P5-7 will be going to Millburn for a hockey tournament. This has been organised by sports leaders and staff at Millburn.

We will be leaving school at 10:45 and will return for 2:15/2:30.

Children can come to school in kit that is appropriate, they can bring hockey sticks if they have them and need appropriate footwear and outerwear.

Children will need a snack, water bottle and packed lunch for the day.

Thank you for the donations of soap and tissues so far. I am looking for some anti bacterial wipes, sanitiser and kitchen roll if possible 🙂

Have a lovely weekend, hopefully the sun continues!

Library Visit

Thank you for all those who have offered to come with us on the library visit.

I only need 2 parent helpers, but the time has actually been changed and is now leaving here at 1:05 and arriving back to school for 3pm. If  you are still able to help with this time could you comment below. There is also a possibility that it may be cancelled if the refurb is not finished in time. But you will be informed if that is the case.

Thank you!

Careers Week

We have got off to a great start for Careers Week.

We began the week with a chat from Mrs Devlin, she talked about her role as an Early Years Practitioner (EYP) and all the skills, qualities and experience she has had up until now. She showed us the difference between how they plan in nursery compared to school and how their learning looks compared to ours. Mrs Devlin is very experienced in her role but as the years have gone by her job title and her responsibilities have changed hugely.

Dragon’s Den

We then got together with Primary 4 and 4/5. We watched a clip of the programme Dragon’s Den, before we heard what our task was going to be. One of our branches of DYW is Tourism, hospitality and catering.  Share with someone at home what you had to do. Looking forward to the finished businesses and pitches!

Today, we looked at the tourism side of things. We had to research up to 5 places to visit in and around Inverness if you were a tourist. We had to include what it is, where it is and why we would go there. Once we had gathered the information we had to then put it into a leaflet. These have been taken home tonight to finish. We had clear instructions and expectations so please support your child in finishing this please. The google doc is available on their classroom to get the information that is needed. Perhaps it has been a worthwhile task as we seem to not be very familiar with our local area and surroundings.

POLAR EXPLORER

Another inspiring morning today, this time with Arran Goddard who came and talked to us about his experience in Polar Academy. Arran had a difficult school life, he has dyslexia so was written off by a lot of people who said he would never achieve anything. He is also a dancer (a very good one too) but because he didn’t fit in with other boys and was the only male dancer in his dance school for 4 years, he suffered from a lot of negative experiences. He was bullied badly in school, he had few friends and lacked a lot of confidence.

He was given the opportunity to apply to Polar Academy  when he was 16 and experience life in the Arctic for 16 days. There are only 20 people selected and he was originally in the Leadership team which was almost like reserves but because of his work ethic and determination he got to be one of the 16 who went out for the life changing experience. He trained for a full year for this experience and since this his whole life has changed and he has transformed into a confident, determined and inspirational person that he was told he would never be.

At only 19 years of age he has achieved some truly wonderful things. We are very lucky to have had this experience of getting to hear about the wonderful journey he has  been on. Arran is now in university in Fort William doing a degree in outdoor leaders, he talks all around the world and is sponsored by Tiso. He is currently undergoing training so he can be a trainer for Polar Academy and give other children the opportunity to experience what he has.

The next 4 part series of Polar Academy is due to start on Monday on BBC 1 at 7:30pm and definitely worth a watch.

Lesson from today- Your mind is the most powerful part of  you, believe in yourself and you can achieve anything!

I am feeling so inspired and so motivated after our 2 speakers this week and really hope the children have taken away something from this even if it is something small!

World Book Day!

What a wonderful day we had for World Book Day!

Our day began with an inspirational talk from author Barbara Henderson. The children were truly captured and it was very interesting to hear about the effort it takes to become and author and all the hard work that goes into it. I certainly gained a lot of knowledge from what Barbara said and I am sure the children took a lot away from it too.

The biggest message that was shared with us all is even though you may come across things that bring you down or set you back, the only thing that will make it happen is if you don’t give up. 121 rejections it took before Barbara was published. She never gave up and neither will we!

In the afternoon, we got the chance to buddy up with P2/3 and we got to do an activity together. We chose a book that we had both heard/read and got to reminisce over some of the picture books we heard in P2 and P1. We then chose our favourite scene from this book and used playdough to create it so we can then create an animation at a later date. They have made a great start. I am looking forward to seeing the finishing piece. I was impressed with how well most of us worked and how we were being role models for the little ones.

Another week complete

Another busy week is done!

Lots of great learning going on.

We completed our four fold task on Constellations.

Part 3 was a mind map and part 4 was answering questions based on what we have read whilst practising our typing skills on our Chromebooks.

Great job done by all, we have almost all completed all 4 tasks :)!

In Maths, our focus is time and multiplication.

Some of us looked at partitioning to help us work out the answer, whilst others were looking at doubling and halving numbers and others were looking at multiplying using times tables. Still lots of practise needed on tables, so keep it going at home!

In time we have been looking at converting from 12 hour and 24 hour and also looking at telling the time in both digital and analogue.

We have been looking at forms of technology that we know, we are so lucky to be surrounded by such an amazing amount of technology. What a list we had. We then in pairs chose one and had to think about the pros and cons of it. We may need some work on those, but we are beginning to understand the term.

We have also been looking at using connectives to extend our sentences and to make them more interesting. Why don’t you have a go at playing the game with someone at home that we played.

We are continuing to work on our learning classroom objects in french and trying to work on our pronunciation, we have been doing this through Bingo, Kim’s Game and Hangman!

The Star Outside My Window

In our new class novel ‘The Star Outside My Window’ by Onjali Q. Rauf, the main character Aniyah is fascinated by stars and calls herself a ‘star hunter’. Share with someone at home why she loves them so much. There is lots of references made to stars so far and because of this we are going to be learning more knowledge about constellations and what they are to gain a deeper understanding for when we are listening to the story.

We began the afternoon in reading pairs reading a passage about Constellations. In the passage there were lots of sub-headings. This allows the passage to have structure and keep focus.

We then developed our summarising skills by highlighting the key points in each sub heading. These are words we feel that someone would need to know to understand what we or someone else is talking about based on a topic.

This is a four fold task that we have all about constellations but working on different skills for each task.

The final two tasks will be revealed tomorrow and Monday. After this we should be constellation experts!
