We have been working hard on rounding and compensating with both addition and subtraction. Subtraction is proving to me a lot more difficult than addition. Confidence definitely needs to be built here! We will have one more day of this strategy on Tuesday before we move onto another one. Basic facts progress is going well, lots of people moving up, which is great to see!
Last week in literacy we have been creating word banks to display for great descriptive words. We went through the alphabet so that we had words for almost all letters and they are accessible for us when we are writing if we need some ideas. We then looked at trying to choose words that created a specific mood, so we were given 3 very similar sentences which had missing words in them and we had to insert descriptive words that would be appropriate for that mood. The moods were sad, calm an excited. Share with someone at home the sentences you created. Spelling this week was a tricky one to make sure you were choosing the correct pattern for the word. We looked at growing the words, rhyming, alliteration and creating sentences. Please make sure you are practising the words at home.
We were exploring animals in danger in different parts of the world. We were given a country and then in pairs we looked up animals that were endangered from that place. We the had to write down information about them and then we are going to create maps of the different countries pin pointing where the animals are from. Note taking is going to be on the agenda for this term as it is a real skill being able to identify which bits of information are the relevant and important parts.
On Friday we had a look at exploring stereotypes and discrimination. We had a really great discussion about this and there were lots of great points that the children were making. Share with someone at home what we chatted about and what task we had to do.
Wednesday already… This week has been a busy one already. Sounds like everyone had a great holiday. We started off with a scavenger hunt on Monday to try and find out what we all got up to and to get all of our chatting out of the way as everyone was very excited and full of energy.
Things to remember-
Everyday we need

Silent Reader
Indoor Shoes
Jacket
Green book- Little book of things.

One more week of swimming- Monday 4th November. Robin and Kieron’s parents as helpers 🙂 Thank you to all those who have helped, we can’t do these things without you!
Literacy, Numeracy, RRS and French are our big focus this term. Lots of hard work will be happening! A very routine term for us with lots of learning!
Can’t quite believe that I am writing this, but we have completed Term 1 in Primary 5! It has been quite a mad term with the inspection, harvest assembly and generally adjusting to life in Primary 5. Looking forward to next term and really being able to get our teeth into things. You have achieved lots already and I am excited for where our learning will take us next term.
Also, a great effort from everyone sharing their skills with us, what a talented bunch we are. I’m all caked out!! But well done for the effort!
During the holidays, if you would like to, then please feel free to add a page onto your profile called ‘October Holidays’ and upload some pictures and things onto your page and some writing to go alongside it. You can take pictures on a phone and can save them to your google drive and then upload them from there.
Please keep up the learning timetable where possible during the holidays and take pictures of that and upload it too. There are a few people who are doing a great job of managing their time and bringing it to school completed. There are others who have not brought it back and uploaded it to their timetable yet.
Use the ideas on the blog for Maths and Literacy ideas- can you find any words or phrases in the holidays that we can use in our Magpie book? Write them down and bring them in if you do. Also looking to see lots of reading being done so our wall can get a little fuller.
We have two final weeks of swimming when we return, if Ronan’s Mum or Dad and Rory B’s Mum can do 28/10 and Robin and Charlie’s Mum or Dad can do 4/11 that will be us covered. Leave a comment to let me know you can do this.
We have had a great first term together and you all deserve your holidays and I hope you come back refreshed and raring to go.
P5 would like to thank you everybody who took in donations for the Highland Food Bank for our Harvest Assembly. There really was a huge amount of food collected by us all and we are sure the Highland Food Bank will be completely delighted with our donations. It’s amazing what we can do when we all pull together.
Child- write down 3,4,5,6,7 digit numbers in a list.
Adult- Circle different digits in each number and the child has to write the value of this number.
The red team were doing this today. Be careful where you put your commas too, think of it as where you take a breath.
An example may be… 42, 289 is the number they have chosen to write down. Make sure they can read the number that they have written. You have circled the 8. The child then writes 80. Repeat this for each number.
Addition and Subtraction
Using Rounding and compensating
Adult- write out sums 2, 3 or 4 digit sums.
Child- figure them out (remember to show your working)
Example 1-
27+49
round 49 to 50 so +1
50+20=70
70+7=77-1(because we added 1)=76
so 27+49=76
Example 2-
131-47
round 131 to 130 so -1
130-40=90 or 130-30=100-10=90
90-7=83+1(because we took 1 away)=84
so 131-47=84
Times Tables-
Child- Write out the table(that you are working on) 8×1= all the way up to 12x (without the answers)
Adult- Time them- 1 minute to complete the answers, then do the same but from the bottom to the top.
Then Adult- Mix up the table in random order without the answers. Again 1 minute to complete the answers.
Prodigy, Sum Dog and TT Rockstars to be continually used.
Inspired by the work of Henri Matisse, we are creating our own cut outs to reflect the learning of our topic and our Harvest Assembly. Excited to see the finished creations 🙂
This year WE are holding the Harvest Assembly. We have decided to support those around us who are in need by donating to the Highland Food Bank. We are asking for donations of food. Urgent items of food include:
tinned fruit
tea bags
dried pasta
UHT milk
breakfast cereals
Other canned foods would also be appreciated however perishables such as bread, fresh milk and fresh fruit can not be accepted due to their short shelf life.
Any donations would be gratefully appreciated. Can they please be handed in by the 7th October 2019.
Plans are well underway for the Harvest assembly which will be led by Primary 5 this year. It takes place in the school but we are in charge of leading it. It will be around the theme of giving and not receiving. The importance of different animals/creatures in our ecosystem and spreading a little bit of love. The children are working really well together and it is nice to have all the Primary 5s together. We have a small group of children who are doing an amazing job of changing the lyrics of ‘Let it Grow’ to ‘Let’s Donate’. The children are looking for donations for the Highland Food Bank. More info will follow for that next week :)!
We all have our own learning timetables now for the week.
We are learning to use our time effectively ensuring that across the week we are accessing each of the games that have been provided to us for 15 minutes, 3 times a week. This can be both in school and at home.
The children need to take responsibility for completing their timetables. On a Monday we will take a picture of these and upload them to our profiles so that we are keeping a record of our usage. All of the games serve a purpose so it is important that they are balanced out.
These will be coming home on Monday and should be brought to school each day.
