Numeracy Ninjas!

What can you do at home?

Place Value-

Child- write down 3,4,5,6,7 digit numbers in a list.

Adult- Circle different digits in each number and the child has to write the value of this number.

The red team were doing this today. Be careful where you put your commas too, think of it as where you take a breath.

An example may be… 42, 289 is the number they have chosen to write down. Make sure they can read the number that they have written. You have circled the 8. The child then writes 80. Repeat this for each number.

Addition and Subtraction

Using Rounding and compensating

Adult- write out sums 2, 3 or 4 digit sums.

Child- figure them out (remember to show your working)

Example 1-

27+49

round 49 to 50 so +1

50+20=70

70+7=77-1(because we added 1)=76

so 27+49=76

Example 2-

131-47

round 131 to 130 so -1

130-40=90 or 130-30=100-10=90

90-7=83+1(because we took 1 away)=84

so 131-47=84

Times Tables-

Child- Write out the table(that you are working on) 8×1= all the way up to 12x (without the answers)

Adult- Time them- 1 minute to complete the answers, then do the same but from the bottom to the top.

Then Adult- Mix up the table in random order without the answers. Again 1 minute to complete the answers.

Prodigy, Sum Dog and TT Rockstars to be continually used.
